The air passenger experience involves many requirements that countries must address relating to effective travel document and border management, information sharing and the identification of high-risk travellers, the screening of people and cargo for security purposes, global anti-terrorism objectives, and many other inter-related priorities.

Because of the overlapping and complementary nature of these programmes and activities, governments have formalized Security and Facilitation as a joint and official Strategic Objective for international aviation, and they continuously pursue new strategic planning and other policy and standards innovations through ICAO to address their latest challenges.

Dominica became the 193rd member state of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) following its official adherence to the Convention on International Civil Aviation.

New biometric passports (or e-passports or digital passports) are a combination of paper and electronic passports and contain biometric information that can be used to authenticate the identity of travelers. This passport contains a special chip that contains the holder’s photograph and personal information (e.g., full name, date of birth).

ICAO mandated that all passports are to be changed to e-passports initially by 2014, subsequently, it was changed to 2020. Due to the impact and challenges of COVID-19 the deadline has been extended further.

The Government of Dominica is being proactive and ensuring that all passports are changed to e-passports by August 2022, to ensure that when this change happens non of its citizens will be impacted and unable to travel. This initiative will prevent Dominican passport holders from being denied entry into various countries after August 2022. The new e-passport has more pages, increased to 48 pages and the inks are more resilient to moisture and damage.

Passports are necessary if you’d like to travel abroad as they verify your identity and nationality. They grant the bearer safe passage and protection in a foreign land. You typically must present your passport several times at the airport if you are flying, and at the border if you are traveling by car.
